Hi -- Attended September 8 BSA Roundtable with Tom
Schulte, Rita Trimarchi; Scott Hammell ran the show including the Boy Scout
specific section:
-
Send Scouting for Food coordinator name (Tom Schulte I believe) to mailto:demetrios.pulas@ferc.gov.
Bags and assigned areas will be distributed next month, October 13, at
the Roundtable.
-
I was asked about National Jamboree contact info. Call Ann Davis
at NCAC, 301-530-9360.
-
For training questions, e.g., when is next [whatever, e.g., Safety Afloat]
training, contact Sue Crane, mailto:acc77@cox.net,
phone 703-765-2280.
-
The District and NCAC are trying to reconstruct training info. The contact
person is the Unit Commissioner, Dick Bowman. I talked to him tonight and
he will help out.
-
Chris McCormack -- can you make a CD of the current Troopmaster Software,
license code if necessary and current database. Give that to me or
to Dick Bowman.
-
I will work with Dick Bowman to use the database to print out training
completed info from the database for all T680 adults.
-
I am hoping Tom Schulte can help me collect training course info and forward
that info to Chris McCormack to include in the master copy of the database.
-
Then Chris, as that info is updated, include Dick Bowman (mailto:bowmanrc@worldnet.att.net)
in the distribution list for database updates which you email periodically.
I will work with Dick Bowman to update his copy and print reports for adult
leader training.
-
Boy Scout Adult Leader Training and Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills are
offered Sept 9, 11 and Sept 17-18, respectively. Contact is Jim Hellwege,
mailto:JHwege@aol.com
for info or to enroll.
-
There is a Fall October 15-17, 2004 Camporee handout which I will give
to Wade Harvey. The camporee is at Ft. Washington Park in MD, same
location as last Fall 2003.
-
There is a physical form for each Scout
-
There is an additional "Climbing Tower Waiver" for those interested
-
There is a Unit pre-registration form
-
There is a very tentative camporee agenda
-
News from the Eagle Board / John Leckner, mailto:Scoutmaster@bsatroop993.org,
phone 703-360-1768:
-
Merit badge jamboree -- each troop asked to cover/lead two merit badges.
Info needed this month, September 2004. The MB Jamboree is February 19,
2005. Send info to Mary Elizabeth Castles (co-chair), mailto:mecastles@yahoo.com,
phone 703-765-0855. I am guessing that Rita Trimarchi will coordinate
this effort and send/collect info.
-
Will give September 2004 Colonial District Crier, Vol 6, Issue 7,
to Wade Harvey. Ask to see it if you wish to read it. It is
on-line (eventually) at the district web page as I recall.
-
20-mile Scout "stroll" on Saturday Dec. 4, 2004 on the C&O Canal from
Great Falls Tavern to White's Ferry, MD. Qualifies for 20-mile hike
for Hiking MB. Contact Peter Farnham for more info; mailto:pdfarnham@aol.com,
phone 703-836-2841. Arrive 7:00 a.m., begin 7:30 a.m. For Venture-level
Scouts age 14 and up (no exceptions, i.e., none younger). Bring your own
crew and at least one adult Scouter. They will provide a sag wagon and
periodic stops/checks on the way.
-
Troop 680 received an attractive red/white/blue ribbon for 2003-2004 Roundtable
Perfect Attendance. This should go on our troop flag, and should be mentioned
at the Court of Honor I suggest.
-
Tom Schulte picked up a second set of membership cards which he will distribute
as needed. He also spent time talking with various Scouters to keep our
registration rolling. Parenthetically, it would seem that something
happened at the district or council level to records--registration, trained,
etc. As mentioned earlier, they are completely rebuilding the training
database (who has completed which training including Scouter, course name,
month and year completed.)
-
Scott Hammell coordinated a good group discussion about training both for
Scouters and especially for Scouts. Scouters need to re-train periodically.
Scouters need to provide training by guiding Scouts (not directing), letting
them fail occasionally but then immediately following up with reflective
discussion where Scouts themselves identify how to improve next time, and
providing an environment that also lets them succeed thus building confidence
and leadership skills. He mentioned BSA training materials including Woods
Wisdom (3 volumes), Troop Program Resources and the Junior Leader Training
kit. Discussion included leadership training for SPL (of course)
but also for the individual Patrol Leaders and for the rest of the Scouts--how
and when to do that?
Scott, Rita or Tom may want to add other info?
Thanks.
John Millikin
