High Adventure Information about Philmont, etc.
The NCAC council phone number is 301-530-9360.
Troop 680 -- here is some info about Philmont (and
other high adventure camps) from my notes from the District Camporee, October
16, 2004. Two parents asked me for more information so here is what I have.
Philmont has many programs, and I think some are offered outside of summer
months. For details, I would start with the web sites (listed below) and
the NCAC Council contact, Robert Kirk, email listed below. John Wells,
also at NCAC, would be another person to contact. For scholarship applications
for Philmont, I presume you would contact Brian C. Luss, Program
Director, National Capital Area Council, BSA, B- 301-214-9170, H- 703-830-9882
(his message is listed below). Finally, we had a Scouter come to a recent
troop meeting and talk for about an hour about Philmont (I believe I am
recalling this correctly) and I believe John Higbee arranged that so either
he or Wade Harvey could give you his name and contact information.

Many high adventure areas to interest our Scouts after car camping loses
its appeal, e.g., Philmont (6 spaces via NCAC left for summer 2005; costs
about $1300 per person). 8-12 days of hiking plus afternoon program
each day. Reserve 18 months in advance, i.e., now for summer 2006.
-
Maine canoeing and hiking; no additional formal program activities. Mailto:ragollhofer@acm.org,
Rick Gallhofer.
-
Northern Tier in Ely, Minn (2 in Canada; 1 in USA). Canoeing, no additional
formal program activities; guide with unit the whole time; see wildlife
and scenery
-
Adirondacks in upstate NY
-
Seabase in Florida (contact BobBensn22@aol.com). Costs about $1200/person.
Out Islands is sailing on a tall ship SCUBA is 6-7 days of diving; costs
about $6,000 per troop. Reserve 18 months in advance.
-
Requirements for Scouts vary--generally 13-14 years old, maybe First Class;
some troops say some of these activities are for Eagle Scouts only. Some
troops have summer camp one year, then high adventure the next.

Contact NCAC, John Wells, for transportation hints and info.
